Cyndy Naylor’s Sassysack handbags combine both fashion and function. Whether you want to create an image of a fun loving beachcomber, a pet lover or a sophisticated woman of the world, Cyndy has the SassySack to fit your image or create a new one.
She didn’t plan to start a new career when she designed and made her first handbag. She wanted a bag that would help her organize for her multi-faceted career as a senior buyer for a large corporation. With an art and design background, she also wanted something that would fit her personality.
“I haunted fabric shops and boutiques looking for materials that appealed to me. Then, I surfed the Internet. My materials had to be fully washable to insure the life of my handbag,” Cyndy says.
Friends admired her first SassySack and Cyndy began to make them for gifts. For a friend who loves cats, an 11 by 8 inch bag with a heavy print canvas black and linen-colored stripe bottom and a black print top with shadowy figures of cats. She also crafted a more flamboyant cat bag that features multi-colored sprawling kitties. Her stock now caters to dog and horse lovers as well.
“I’m always looking for unique fabrics and I combine them in a myriad of ways so that no two are alike.”
For nature lovers consider firefly, ladybug or bee prints. She also uses flower prints, both realistic and exotic. There are bags for bird lovers and for those who appreciate music. The retro look introduces subtle, sophisticated and quirky design elements.
Among the specialty designs, Cyndy favors is a series based on the Wizard of Oz. A 14 and ˝ by 10 Sassysack featuring faces of most of the Over the Rainbow characters on top with the bottom striped in teal blue, pink, green, purple and black. What could be a more appropriate finishing touch than a “Dorothy’s red shoes pin.”
With Halloween coming up, consider one of the holiday designs. Their names tell it all – Pumpkin Patch, A Little Batty and Boo Hoo. Winter patterns include Snowmen and pets in winter poses.
Sizes range from the small 8 by 11 inch and 12 By 11 inch shoulder bags to her 14 and ˝ by 10 inch carryalls. Straps range in length from 25 to 27 inches. From two sections to eight interior pockets, her mantra is easy organization. Every bag has a zipper closing and most have two exterior pockets. Handles that match bag designs are attached with silver clip ends
“I get E-mails from customers telling me about the way strangers stop them to ask about their handbag. It’s very gratifying and I’ve made new friends because often people want to own more than one and they keep coming back for different styles,” Cyndy says.
Do you have a southern winter getaway planned? Consider her “Flip-flop” bag with multi-colored beach footwear decorating the top half of the bag. A pink, black, white and green stripe on the bottom half complements the colors. A flip-flop pin finishes off this “trip to the beach” look.
Or how about Paris in the spring? Cyndy’s white on black Eiffel Tower print bag is topped with a black and white polka dot print and finished with an Eiffel Tower pin. If you can’t make the trip, you can still have a memento.
“I’m really excited about my first visit to Old-Fashioned Christmas in the Woods and setting aside a number of weeks to produce new things just for this show. My husband, Lee, will be helping me set up.”
Bags range in price from $55 to $65. Bags sized for diaper bags are $75 and do not announce their purpose. These, too, are designed for long-term use. Each bag includes washing instructions. The majority come clean in Cheer dark formula with cold water. She recommends line drying.
